ONGOING Early Years Review E-Update Keep yourself informed of the latest training specials, classroom ideas and other news from ETP.
Transitions Transitions can be a difficult time for any teacher. The first step is to look at the number of times a child must move from one activity to another. If possible, eliminate as many as you can. Children and teachers enjoy each other more when larger blocks of organized time are scheduled for play. Allow for at least 45 minutes of uninterrupted play. Plan for those necessary transitions. Have a list of transition ideas at hand and include methods of moving from one place to another, such as: “Hop like a bunny,” “Walk backwards,” and “March like a soldier.” Write down multiple songs and finger plays you can sing while they wait. Keeping this list nearby is guaranteed to help you in times of need. For more information on transitions, check out our 2005 Winter newsletter. To buy helpful transition cards, visit Saltwater Zapf.
Know your STARS requirements As of January 1, 1999, the State of Washington requires all family child care providers, center directors, program supervisors, school-age directors, site coordinators and lead teachers take the Basic 20-hour STARS class within the first six months of being licensed or hired. (There is an exemption if you meet the educational requirements or have been waived by your licensor.) All staff must complete 10 hours of continuing education from an approved STARS trainer or organization every year. If you are in management, a minimum of five hours must be in administration topics. Scholarships are available to help pay for required STARS training. If you need financial assistance, you are encouraged to submit a scholarship application. These are found on the STARS registry website at: https://wws2.wa.gov/dshs/stars/ Step 1) Complete a STARS profile form. After it’s reviewed, a STARS ID # is issued to you. This 9 digit number is used to track your trainings. Step 2) Take your STARS ID # to every training you attend. The trainer needs it to properly assign your STARS credit. (You can no longer use your Social Security Number.) Step 3) Audit your account regularly to ensure every training you attend is reported.
